DIY Maternity Dress: Sewing Process

Hi Darling, this is the last part of my first project “DIY Maternity Dress”.In the previous posts DIY Maternity Dress and DIY Maternity Dress Pattern making the process of sketching and drafting described, In this Part I will demonstrate the fabric , cutting out and sewing process.

Sewing Process of DIY Maternity Dress Project

Fabric: Any 4-way stretch fabrics like Jersey, knitted cotton and etc, width: 150 cm, fabric length: 150 cm.

Note: The fabric should be 4-way stretch because front and back pattern is on vertical stripe and side panel is on horizontal stripe.

Cutting Out Process

Maternity Dress Pattern
Maternity Dress Pattern Layout
  • Front: cut 1 on fold
  • Back: cut 1 on fold
  • Side Panel:  cut 2
  • 1 1/2″ wide bias binding for armhole and neckline

Sewing Process

Lay front piece with side panels, right side together, pin and sew the seams.

Lay and pin the back piece with it and sew the seam.

Pin and Stitch the shoulder seams.

Use Bias binding to finish armholes and neckline. The instruction posted earlier in how to make bias binding for armhole and necklaces tutorial.

Finish the raw edge of the hem as demonstrated in Overclocked hem finish
